The city of Brookings is moving its next meeting about a mask mandate to a larger arena, after hundreds showed up at a meeting last week to protest the idea during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The meeting has now been scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Swiftel Center, according to a city press release. The facility has a 30,000-square-foot arena as well as banquet and conference rooms and is located at 824 32nd Avenue in Brookings.

"The event will be designed to adhere to proper social distancing to limit the spread of COVID-19," the press release stated. "The Swiftel Center arena provides ample space so individuals can feel comfortable practicing social distancing while also having the opportunity to attend and participate in the city council meeting."

The city council will do a second reading on the proposed mask mandate and is expected to take a final vote.

The proposal comes as the city is seeing a spike in cases tied to South Dakota State University students.

If the mandate passes, masks will be required in city-sanctioned events when a minimum of 6 feet in social distancing couldn't occur, and in all indoor businesses and public spaces for the same reason for every person younger than 5.

A crowd of people wearing red to show their opposition to a potential mask mandate watch a city council meeting from just outside the chambers on Wednesday, September 2, in Brookings. So many people showed up to the meeting that many of them had to show solidarity from beyond the chamber doors.

When the city held its first discussion, an estimated 250 people showed up, leaving standing room only in the facility as dozens came forward to address their concerns with the council directly.

Most showed up wearing red shirts to object to the proposal, citing freedom, economic concerns and, in at least one case, a willingness to die on their own terms. Others threatened the possibility of legal action.

One resident also started an online petition, which had more than 2,100 signatures as of Monday morning.

Over 200 people wear red in solidarity against a potential city-wide mask mandate during a city council meeting on Wednesday, September 2, in Brookings.

At Tuesday's meeting, some residents are expected to wear green or white shirts, plus a mask to show their support for the mandate.

Doors are expected to open at the arena at 5 p.m., and the city will also offer an online option for those who want to provide public comment, but do not feel comfortable attending in person.

It is uncertain if this observed association arises through protection of uninfected wearers (protective effect), via reduced transmission from infected mask wearers (source control), or both. Objective:To assess whether rec...  READ MORE

Abstract There is no biological history of mass masking until the current era. It is important to consider possible outcomes of this society-wide experiment. The consequences to the health of individuals is as yet unknown. Masked individuals have measurably higher inspiratory flow than non-masked individuals.
