CA: Tempers flare during mask protest at Sprouts; prompts store to temporarily close

Tempers escalated during an anti-mask protest in front of Sprouts Farmers Market, prompting Redding police to show up and forcing the grocery store to close for a short time Saturday afternoon.

At one point there were nine police vehicles parked in front of the grocery store at the Mt. Shasta Mall.

There also were people protesting inside the store, according to Shasta County emergency scanner reports.

Cpl. Chris Mills said authorities came to Sprouts because police received several calls for service due to a protest. He did not immediately know who called the police.

There were no arrests and no injuries, Mills said.

It wasn’t immediately clear who organized Saturday’s protest, but calls to reopen Shasta County completely and defy the state’s mask mandate have been going on for several weeks, including at county Board of Supervisors meetings. The Facebook group RE-OPEN Shasta County has more than 3,000 members.

Organizers at the protest were handing out fliers that said, “THERE IS NO STATUTORY LAW that mandates masks” and “ATTN BUSINESSES: ‘GUIDELINES’ ARE NOT LAWS.”

Confirmed virus cases in the country reached a milestone of 5 million in August, the highest of any country. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, last month linked the spike in cases in part to cities and states that perhaps reopened too fast.

Randy Miller said he was driving by the store when he decided to stop and check things out.

Police showed up at Sprouts at the Mt. Shasta Mall in Redding after an anti-mask protest on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2020 got out of hand.

“I saw the no-mask thing and I support the no-mask thing, so I pulled up to see how they were doing and support them,” the 57-year-old Redding resident said.

Miller believes the COVID-19 pandemic has been exaggerated and that it’s become “propaganda” and politicized. “When the shutdown started, it was 15 days to slow the curve thing. It’s five months later, the hospitals aren’t overwhelmed,” he said.

Nonetheless, the U.S. passed 175,000 deaths last Friday due to the disease, and health experts say it could become a leading cause of deaths until the end of the year, CNN reported.

Fauci earlier this month said America's daily infection rate must fall to 10,000 by September to gain control over the coronavirus before the colder weather arrives and flu season worsens the problem. Currently, the country sees 50,000 to 60,000 new infections, he said in an interview with the Journal of the American Medical Association.

It is uncertain if this observed association arises through protection of uninfected wearers (protective effect), via reduced transmission from infected mask wearers (source control), or both. Objective:To assess whether rec...  READ MORE

Abstract There is no biological history of mass masking until the current era. It is important to consider possible outcomes of this society-wide experiment. The consequences to the health of individuals is as yet unknown. Masked individuals have measurably higher inspiratory flow than non-masked individuals. This study is of new masks removed from manufacturer packaging, as well as a laundered cl...  READ MORE
